Mitsumasa Anno 100th Anniversary Exhibition Aesop’s Fables: Gentle Brushstrokes
An exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of painter and picture book author Mitsumasa Anno (1926–2020), titled The Fox who found “Aesop’s Fables,” is currently on view at the “House in the Forest: Mitsumasa Anno Museum” in Kumihama-cho, Kyotango City. The exhibition features a collection of warm, watercolor paintings inspired by Aesop’s fables.
The displayed works include pieces depicting the premise that an illiterate mother fox created the stories at the urging of her cub, such “The Tortoise and the Hare,” which conveys the importance of hard work, and “The Dog with the Piece of Meat in Its Mouth,” which warns against greed—all rendered with a gentle touch.
The 30 pieces in the “Children of the Past” series, themed around childhood, depict nostalgic games and scenes with a soft brushstroke, accompanied by quotes from the artists’ mentors.
Sachiko Shirozuka (59), who visited with her husband from Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture, said, “This was my first time seeing the exhibition. I was moved by the charming atmosphere.”
Guitarist Akinori Yamazaki from Amino-cho, Kyotango City, will hold a concert starting at 1:30 p.m. on June 21st.
The commemorative exhibition runs through September 7. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays. Admission fee required.
