Kyotango Geotrail

Kyogamisaki to Ukawa Onsen Course

This course takes you along a coastal terrace which was formed by marine erosion. The course starts at Kyogamisaki, the northernmost tip of the Kinki Region, passes through the Sodeshi Rice terraces, one of Japan’s Top 100 Rice Terraces, and finishes in Ukawa Onsen where you can take in views of the Sea of Japan.

【The Tip of Kyogamisaki Cape】

Protruding from the tip of the Tango Peninsula is Kyogamisaki Cape, the northernmost tip of the Kinki Region. It is said that the cape is named after the fact that the countless column-shaped rocks look like scrolls (Kyo in Japanese).

【Kyogamisaki Lighthouse】

Constructed in 1898, Kyogamisaki Lighthouse is one of only 5 first class lighthouses with first order lenses in the whole country. In December 2022, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property.

【Sodeshi Rice Terraces】

The rice paddies of Sodeshi can be found between the craggy mountains and the sea. There are about 400 rice terraces that fan out towards the Sea of Japan. They have been chosen as one of Japan’s Top 100 Rice terraces.

【Ukawa Onsen Yoshino no Sato】

Marvel at the rich blue of the Sea of Japan and the setting sun as it sinks below the horizon at this hot spring. Ukawa Onsen Yoshino no Sato is nestled between bamboo groves and surrounded by the sounds of nature. The male and female baths swap location every day.
