Yuhigaura to Shotenkyo Course

This course guides you from Yuhigaura Beach along Shotenkyo Beach, which is the longest beach in the Kinki Region at roughly 6km. On this walk you will take in the calm waves of Kumihama Bay and the expansive Sea of Japan while walking alone the seaside promenades. This long trail is worth a try!

【Hakoishihama Beach】

Located in Kumihama, Hakoishihama Beach is a popular destination for beach-goers due to its clear water and white sand. Pebbles mix with the sand in its shallows and at the back of the beach, there are small hills called the Tango Sand Dunes, which are a great spot for looking down on the beautiful beach. There are all sorts of plants growing on the dunes, including the endangered plant “Toteiran”.

【Tango Sand Dunes】

The Tango Sand Dunes can be found in the area spanning from the edge of the sandbar to the mouth of the Kizugawa River in Amino-cho. The dunes are the largest in Kyoto Prefecture stretching about 4.7km along the coastline and with an area of about 590 hectares. Local specialty sweet potatoes, watermelons and melons are grown on the dunes.

【Shotenkyo Beach】

Shotenkyo is the sandbar that separates Kumihama Bay from the Sea of Japan and itis the westernmost part of the 8km “long beach”, the longest beach in Kansai, which starts in Hamazume to the east. There are over 40 hotels and lodgings in the Shotenkyo area.
