This course takes you on a walk through nature along the coastline from Shotenkyo Beach to Asahi Fishing Port with the mountains as a backdrop. It is said that this area was very prosperous as a base for transporting and handling rice tax back in the Edo Period (1603-1868 CE).
【Shotenkyo Beach】
Shotenkyo is the sandbar that separates Kumihama Bay from the Sea of Japan and itis the westernmost part of the 8km “long beach”, the longest beach in Kansai, which starts in Hamazume to the east. There are over 40 hotels and lodgings in the Shotenkyo area.
【Kumihama Bay】
Cut off from the Sea of Japan by Shotenkyo Sandbar, Kumihama Bay is a large lagoon with a circumference of about 28km. Oyster farming is carried out on the calm waters of the bay and the whole bay area has been designated as a Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Landscape.
【Asahi Fishing Port】
Asahi Fishing Port is the only port in the Kumihama Bay area where large ships can enter.
In the Edo Period (1603-1868 CE), in Kumano-gun (present day Kumihama), large cargo ships would carry rice for taxation and large boats from other regions would dock here.
Even now, rocks that were used to moor the large ships can be found around the port.
