Kyotango Geotrail

Tateiwa Rock to Mitsu Course

This course stretches from Tango-cho to Amino-cho and allows you to explore the unique typography of Tateiwa Rock, the Taiza coastline, Shiroshima Island and more.

【Tateiwa Rock】

With a circumference of about 20 meters, Tateiwa Rock stands proudly on the seafront as a symbol of Kyotango and the Geopark. The surrounding beach has large grains of sand which are cleaned by the clear waters and waves of the sea. In summer, the beach is perfect for swimming and in winter, the area is transformed into a wintery landscape where the rough waves meet the snowy face of Tateiwa Rock.

【Statues of Empress Hashiudo & her Son】

The bronze statues of Empress Hashiudo and her son, Prince Shotoku stand at 3.5m and 1.5m respectively and the stone pillar behind them is 5.5m tall.

Legend has it that Empress Hashiudo fled to Taiza with the Prince when there was a conflict between the noble families in the Imperial Court. Once it was time to return home, the Empress gave her name. Hashiudo, to this area, but the villagers dared not usher her name as they felt it discourteous. Instead, they kept the same Kanji characters for her name but read it as “Taiza” instead. The statues honoring the Empress and her story stand facing the Sea of Japan.

【Taiza Fishing Port】

At Taiza Fishing Port in Kyotango’s Tango-cho facing the Sea of Japan, the snow crab fishing season starts every year on November 6th. The crab caught in Taiza Fishing Port and the surrounding 20-50m radius off the coast of Kyogamisaki Cape is known as Taiza Crab. With fishing carried out daily, the crab is extremely fresh and is known for its high quality and taste.

【Shiroshima Island】

Shiroshima Island is elevated 21 meters above sea level and has a promenade circling its entire 4km circumference.

【Mitsu Fishing Port】

Over in Amino-cho is Mitsu Fishing Port. The port and coastline of the Mitsu area has been used as the backdrop for many TV dramas and films.  The nearby small red lighthouse is a marked fishing spot and is a popular photo spot.
