Zenjoji Temple

ABOUT
THIS
SPOT

Zenjoji Temple played a significant role in the Tango Chirimen Silk industry.

In the Edo period (1603-1868 CE), Tango textiles were suffering from a slump, losing ground to the highly skilled and famous Nishijin textile industry. In order to re-establish Tango textiles’ standing in the industry, Saheiji Kinuya, a hataya (weaver) from Mineyama, prayed twice to the Maitreya Bodhisattva at Zenjoji Temple, fasted and went to the Nishijin district in Kyoto City to learn the Nishijin craft. This is said to have been the origin of today’s Tango Chirimen Silk Crepe.

The first cotton crepe fabric weaved by Saheiji was donated to Zenjoji Temple and has been safely stored and regarded as one of the temple’s treasures to this day.
