Clothing the Heiji Jizo
November 23rd
Clothing the Heiji Jizo
Every year on November 23rd at Jourin-ji Temple, a ritual is held for the Heiji Jizo statue (guardian deity of children & travellers). During the ritual, a sutra is sung by the chief priest and a hood and coat made of about 60 kilograms of straw are placed on the statue. The statue is 5.3 meters tall so ladders and bamboo poles are used when dressing it.
This ritual has become a yearly tradition and an early nod to the winter season ahead.
