Sounji Temple & Garden

ABOUT
THIS
SPOT

Sounji Temple can be found about 700m west of Kumihama station, near Kamitani Jinja Shrine. It is a Zen Buddhist Temple of the Rinzai Sect.

The current main hall, abbot’s chambers and head priest’s quarters were reconstructed in 1801 and it is thought that the pond and garden were built around that time. It is quite the sight in autumn and spring, when the garden and surrounding forests show off their best colors.

There is a large traditional garden on site and it is a great spot to visit for peaceful stroll and some fresh air.

Sounji Temple garden is a Kyoto Prefecture Designated Cultural Property
