Statues of Empress Hashiudo & her Son

ABOUT
THIS
SPOT

Near Tateiwa Rock in Taiza in Tango cho, stand bronze statues of Empress Hashiudoso, one of the seven princesses of Kyotango, and her Son, Prince Shotoku. The statues stand at 3.5m and 1.5m respectively, and the stone pillar behind them is 5.5m tall.

When there was conflict between noble families in the Imperial Court, Empress Hashiudo fled to Taiza with the Prince. When the time came for them to return back to their land, the locals asked if they could name the village “Hashiudo” after the Empress but quickly decided it would be discourteous. Instead, they kept the same Kanji characters for her name, 間人, but changed the reading to “Taiza”.
