Ukiyo-e and Japonism At The Nishijin-ori Asagi Art Museum Tango Branch

The Nishijin-ori Asagi Art Museum Tango Branch will host the special exhibition
“Ukiyo-e and Japonisme: The Art of Fantasy and Light, Nishijin-ori” starting Saturday, April 4, 2026.

In this exhibition, visitors can enjoy fantastical works that differ from the originals,
such as Katsushika Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” rendered as a large Nishijin-ori tapestry using phosphorescent thread.

The exhibition also focuses on “Japonisme,” the Western artistic movement influenced by Japanese art, including ukiyo-e,
allowing visitors to explore its background and scope while viewing the works.

Furthermore, the exhibition highlights the intricate weaving techniques achieved using an 1,800-shaft Jacquard loom.
Through works such as “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” and “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō” rendered in Nishijin-ori, visitors can experience the allure of traditional craftsmanship.
